Happy Friday! (And some turkey themed lunches)

Well, you’ve almost made it to Friday! Yippee! That’s always cause for celebration in our house. For tomorrow’s lunches for my little turkeys, I went with a turkey theme. This just might be my altogether favorite themed lunch from over the years. I’ve probably done this one over a dozen times and it never gets old to me. I think that little turkey is so darn cute! I made a turkey shaped PB sandwich. Ain’t nobody (re: me) got time for jelly today. I used my food safe markers to add some details. I also packed some crackers, a mandarin orange (Smalls), fresh berries (Bigs), red grapes, half a cheese stick, and a pumpkin brownie with a candy corn for dessert.

Hope your Friday isn’t too fowl! HAHAHHAHA

Ornament Themed Kindergarten School Lunch

I only have one more special school lunch to make for this year, after today. I don’t even know where the time has gone!

For tomorrow’s lunch, I made an ornament shaped sunbutter and apple butter sandwich. I used lots of colors to make it festive. I also packed pita chips, red grapes, colby jack cheese, a mandarin orange, and two little peppermint meringues that I made yesterday.

Owl Themed Kindergarten & 3’s School Lunches (and a Blogiversary!)

Today is my 2nd blog anniversary! I can’t believe it’s been two years already. It’s been such a HOOT.

To celebrate, here are two cute, little owl lunches:

I made owl shaped pumpkin cream cheese sandwiches. I added googly eyes and used my Food Writers to add wings, beaks, and little owl toes (claws?). I also packed dried cranberries, cheddar sandwich crackers, homemade cinnamon applesauce, and a [partially eaten, shhhh] Little Debbie Star Crunch.

Sheep Themed Kindergarten & 3’s School Lunches

Since both of my boys are still learning about farms and farm animals, I made sheep sandwiches for them. They are sheep shaped (say that a few times!) sunbutter and apple jelly sandwiches, detailed with Food Writers. I also packed popcorn (I thought it looked like sheep fluff!), plums, yogurt covered raisins, Craisins, and a few candy corn.

First Day of Fall Kindergarten & 3’s School Lunches

Tomorrow is…wait for it…okay don’t…THE FIRST DAY OF FALL! For us, living in sunny and hot Florida, this means nothing more than not looking like a wackadoodle for putting out pumpkin decorations (I proudly fall into the wackadoodle category, as my fall decor has been out for weeks!). Sometimes, we Florida girls will also wear boots, quite unnecessarily (I also do this), order our weight in (sometimes skinny and alternative milk) PSLs (look it up if you don’t already know), and marvel at how crisp our mornings have been, in the mid 70’s. Ahhhh, Fall! Would I love to see some orange leaves? Yes. Would I love the weather to require boots or snuggly sweatshirts? Heck yes. But for now, I shall celebrate with pumpkin shaped sandwiches in my kids’ lunchboxes. I do what I can with what I have.

For my babes, I made a honey maple turkey, colby jack, and mayo sandwiches shaped like pumpkins. I used Food Writers to add a few details. I also packed cheddar sandwich crackers, peaches, grapes (for Bigs), broccoli (for Smalls), applesauce squeezey (for Bigs), an Apple Pie Oatmeal Cookie, and a few candy corn (or “candy pa-corn” as my Smalls calls it).

Circus Week – Horse VPK School Lunch

Tomorrow is Bigs’ last circus day. It’s been such a fun week for them. They got their faces painted, they played carnival games, won carnival prizes, and did lots of learning games.

To finish out the week, I went with a horsey lunch. Again, I was thinking about “Water for Elephants”. It’s sort of my go-to circus movie. Well, that and Britney Spears’ “Circus”. You know.

I made a horse shaped PB&J. The poor thing looks like another My Little Pony. I just can’t seem to get a real horse look. Neigh. The grand horsey is standing atop his bread crusty hay. I also packed pretzels, fruit salad (grapes, blackberries, and raspberries), and an organic yogurt squeeze for dessert.

Happy Birthday! VPK School Lunch

Saturday is my Big Buddy’s 5th birthday. I honestly don’t know where the time went. I blinked. I literally only blinked.

He was screaming and crying, in his new baby way, his little newborn faced all scrunched up. He then turned his gorgeous violet eyes on to me and stopped crying. We gazed into each others’ eyes, and time stood still. That was the first moment of my life, as well as his.

I knew there was a Bigs-shaped hole in my heart, before he was born, but what I didn’t know was just how perfectly he’d fill it. He’s completely changed my life. He’s made me less selfish. He’s taught me patience (but oh, I am still working on this one). He’s taught me unconditional love, from a depth in my heart I didn’t know existed. This boy is so incredibly special. I hope he feels as loved as he is, always, for I’d surely be lost without him. <3

To kick off his 5th birthday celebrations, I packed a special birthday lunch for him for tomorrow:

I made a cupcake shaped PB&J and added detailing to show the cupcake liner, the icing, and a cherry, and added confetti sprinkles. I also packed goldfish crackers, blueberries, trail mix, a mandarin orange, and seasoned corn. I used my cake slice silicone molds and cupcake picks as decoration. I didn’t pack a dessert because I’ll be bringing donuts into school after lunch.

It’s going to be awesome having a 5 year old. He’s simply the best.

Easter Egg VPK School Lunch

In keeping with the Easter theme for lunches this week, here is what I packed for my oldest:

It’s an Easter egg shaped PB&J. I used my Food Writers to add fun details. I also packed Goldfish crackers, a mandarin orange, green grapes, strawberries, a chocolate cherry cookie, and two little jelly beans. I used a bunny cupcake pick as decoration.

“Peeps” VPK School Lunch

It’s Easter week! That means re-emphasizing our Risen King…and fun Easter lunches! It’s also a short week, with no school on Good Friday, so I’ve got to pack a lot of cute into just three little lunches.

For tomorrow’s lunch, I went with one of my favorite candies – Peeps! While I didn’t use actual Peeps (those are going to be in the boys’ baskets), I made a PB&J into a Peeps shape. Are you Camp Peeps or Camp Ewww?

I used my yellow Food Writers to outline the Peep shape and used gold foodsafe spray to emphasize his color. I used black for his trademark waxy eyeball (which I always nibble off first). I placed him back in his little sandwich nest. I Also packed grapes and strawberries, ice animal crackers, and a few jelly beans for dessert. I used a bunny cupcake pick for decoration. I also used Peeps cupcake wrappers, instead of my silicone ones. I found them at a craft store.

Community Helper Themed Lunches – Part II (Fire & Rescue)

My Bigs’ Police lunch went over well. Today was Pizza Delivery Day. The school ordered pizza in. So fun. Because I know my bud eats as much as a 9000 pound gorilla, I also packed him a bento of sides, to accompany his pizza.

I packed strawberries, blueberries, homemade fruit snacks (recipe below), mandarin orange, and a Campfire Cookie.

Homemade Fruit Snacks

1 cup orange juice (I use concentrate and water if I don’t have orange juice)
1 cup frozen or fresh fruit (I like to use strawberries and add peaches, sometimes)
1 – 2 T honey
5 – 6 packets of unflavored gelatin

Directions:

Pour juice (or water and concentrate) and fruit into a small saucepan. Stir over medium heat until the fruit is tender.

Cool for about 10 minutes. Place in a food processor, add honey, and whiz until liquified.

Add the gelatin and whiz again.

Pour into a small cookie sheet and place in fridge for at least 30 minutes. Cut into squares (or whatever shapes!).

For tomorrow’s Fire & Rescue day, I made a fire-themed lunch:

I free-hand cut (is that even correct English? don’t care) fire on bread and then added details with Food Writers. It’s a PB&J. I also packed strawberries, a mandarin orange, honey wheat pretzels, dried cranberries, and a Campfire Cookie.

And for my Smalls, who will be in his one-day-a-week-school:

I packed a half peanut butter and jelly sandwich, on which I made a happy face. I also packed four little Trader Joe’s cinnamon school house cookies, strawberries, applesauce, a few pretzels, and some carrots.
